According to SGS's Brazilian test method, ICUMSA 45 sugar is the highest quality sugar available on the market today. The quality of sugar is determined by a system developed by ICUMSA (International Commission For Uniform Methods Of Sugar Analysis), an international body that seeks to standardize the measurements used to describe sugar, so that no matter where the buyer lives, or where the source sugar is located, an understanding of the type and quality of sugar can be gained simply by citing a classification such as ICUMSA 45.

ICUMSA 600-2000 is typically the grades that VHP sugar falls into. VHP or Very High Polarity sugar is a raw sugar with a polarity greater than 99.4% and contains relatively few contaminants, two reasons why this sugar is light brown. Polarity is a term used to describe the percentage of sucrose that is present in a raw sugar mass. The term VHP is widely understood to mean that 99.4% of the total mass of a raw sugar is pure sucrose and that 0.6% or less is residual material.

VHP remains in high demand as it is much cheaper and easier to refine than standard raw sugars.
